All year round we really try to give our children a good money sense and an understanding of what sorts of demands they will have as an adult without overwhelming them now. They have chore charts and allowances and all of them have saved their money at various times for things that they want to have. We also try to make them aware of many that are not as fortunate and that if you have a little extra you should always give back in any way you can.
For a few years now we have always purchased gifts for families that may not have extra to spend and found various ways to give. This year we decided to create an advent calendar to really encourage the children to give more of their time and our money to help make this Christmas season better for others. Some of the items on the calendar are family related, allowing us to spend more time together learning more about the real reason for Christmas.
This week was our first week and the children loved it! It is also great being able to educate the kids as well, since some of the advent items brought up questions. Some of our first week items were to make a donation to the food bank, the kids made Christmas Cards for some of the troops that are serving overseas, the girls had buddies as part of their Girls Night Out program so they made cards and purchased thank you gifts for them, we donated to the Salvation Army and the kids also made cat toys as part of the package we will be donating to the SPCA this month! We also got together with a group of friends to make more than 100 Christmas cards for special care residents where we will be caroling mid month!
This week some of our focus will be on learning more about Christmas and the blessings of Christmas. We plan to attend the Drive Through Nativity at our church as well as attend a Community Christmas Concert. The kids are also excited about caroling at the Special Care home later in the week. It is so great to be able to do this as a family as well as with the children’s cousins. We love being able to share these memories. I’m so thankful for the giving hearts that our children have, they make me so proud everyday!
