My nephew Ryan loves going dulsing. It was his birthday a few weeks back and that was one of the big plans he wanted to happen on his big day. He asked if that could be his birthday party. He wanted to be able to take his friends and family and show them what it was all about. It has been a tradition with his grandparents for many years. And he was very excited to share that experience.
Unfortunately, his birthday had more rain then sun and because once you pick dulse, it needs to sit in the sun for the entire day, it was not possible to do that on his birthday. So we planned a day in advance to go, which was today. 🙂
If you’re like me and know little to nothing about dulsing… Dulse is a type of seaweed that grows on rocks. In the Bay of Fundy where we live, the tides are super extreme, so when it’s a low tide, you can go out with the tide and pick the dulse.

It needs to be rinsed in the salt water and cannot touch the sand. Once home, you can lay it out on a tarp to dry.
I don’t eat dulse and had no real interest in picking it, but I was excited to explore the low tide and all that it offers.
Today was the lowest tide so far this summer which was perfect. We met at 830am and headed to the beach. We walked out with the tide, which took roughly 20-30 minutes to reach the water. We then followed the tide out for another 30 minutes until it started to slowly come back in.
It was amazing! Lots of sea life everywhere. No one was around, but us and it was so quiet and peaceful. We explored for 2 hours and the kids all had so much fun. There was not a ton of dulse, but they enjoyed picking it.
I’ll definitely return to an early morning low tide in the future. It was an amazing day!
After lunch I brought the kids over to Ryan’s grandparents so they could lay out the dulse to dry. We then enjoyed an afternoon at the lake, followed by some ice cream.

It was so awesome to spend the full day outside, so I decided we should head to the Marsh for a walk to end the evening. The fresh air is so good for my soul, especially the salt water. As I write this I’m enjoying some time on our deck. It’s so beautiful and peaceful this evening. I’m excited we still have lots of summer left. Days like today remind me how grateful I am to live in “Canada’s Ocean Playground”!
