When I became a Lead at Automattic a little more than a year ago I was worried about how I would adjust to all of the zoom calls that come with being a Lead. I was used to very few calls and a super flexible schedule. It didn’t take me long to adjust and after moving a few calls around, I had a good flow to my weeks. When I started my leave I didn’t think much of what I may miss. I knew I would miss my team and peers, they are amazing people who I’m used to chatting with each day, but after two weeks, I realized this weekend that I miss the calls.
Noah always asks if we actually talk about work on these calls lol. And yes we do, but part of being a lead is developing relationships and getting to know your team. In addition to one of the perks of being a lead it also in turn helps you to help develop your team members. I have an amazing team and I truly enjoyed my 1:1 time with each of my team members. I caught myself wondering a few times this weekend what each were up to and it makes me happy to be reminded of all the great people I work with.
I know a lot of people can often categorize themselves as either an introvert or an extrovert, but I’ve always struggled doing that. I love working from home and only really being around Sandy each day. I like the quiet and enjoy being in my own space. I don’t enjoy crowds of people in any situation. But I also love being around people, certain groups of people. I am very social and outgoing, so this is where my extrovert comes in. Keeping both sides balanced can be tough sometimes. 🙂
I look forward to weekends when everyone is home and we can make plans with our friends and family. I found this one hard as the girls had drivers education all weekend and Noah had basketball. Ezra loves to talk and I love to interact with him, but it’s also nice to mix it up and he loves people, so he gets excited to see everyone and get out.
I was thankful to get out to a live show, Broken Leg Theatre, that we used to attend the 3 times a year it happens, but haven’t since Covid. Ella’s squad performed in it, so Sandy and I went on a date. The theatre was at half capacity and it was a great show. It’s always awesome to see Ella’s excitement for the stage.
Last evening the Fisher family, who I’m beyond thankful is always up for anything, went on an evening snowshoe with us at the Marsh. We see them every weekend and it’s always nice to catch up.
I’ve realized that during this leave I need to find ways to stay in touch so I can balance my introvert with my extrovert. I know when the weather is better and Ezra and I can get out more that will help. Earlier this past week we spent a morning with Tiffany in Greenwood and a morning visiting my brother and Alice. I’m excited for Spring and all of the adventures we will have.
