A Little Homework: Art Gallery of Nova Scotia

Our CEO Matt gave us some homework this week that I was actually excited about. He asked us to spend an hour or two exploring a museum during work time because “exposure to the best works and history of others helps us elevate our craft.” I’m a huge museum person (we have a Nova Scotia Museum family pass that we use constantly), but I’d never made it to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. It’s not part of our pass, and I wasn’t sure if it would hold the kids’ interest. But this felt like the perfect excuse to finally check it out. I knew Ezra would be game for the adventure. Honestly, that kid loves exploring anywhere, so Sandy and I took him along for an afternoon downtown.

The gallery spreads across two connected buildings and has way more variety than I expected. We spent time with the famous Maud Lewis exhibit (her actual tiny house is inside the gallery, painted floor to ceiling in her bright folk art style), wandered through galleries featuring indigenous artists like Kent Monkman, and got to see paintings that were genuinely 400+ years old. There were beautiful wood carvings, contemporary pieces, and even a random payphone tucked away that felt appropriately museum-worthy at this point. It was one of those afternoons where you just soak it all in and come away feeling a little more inspired. Thanks for the homework assignment, Matt.
