My Incredible Great Aunt Claire

From the time I was young I have had a desire for travelling and adventuring in the United States. When I was much younger I said many times that when I was older, that was where I would live. When my Aunt Claire was 17 years old she left the small area of Pubnico, NS and ventured to Boston, MA to find work and start a new life.

When I was 17 years old, I went to Boston for the very first time and fell in love with the city that she would call home for most of her life. My friend that I was visiting in Boston took me to see Aunt Clare. She was so happy and thought it was amazing that a teenager would make it a priority to see her aunt while I was there. My Aunt Claire was always an inspiration to me. I admired that she was strong and brave enough to uproot herself the way she did. She came to visit NS often, bringing her family (my Dad’s cousins) to spend time with her brothers & sisters, nieces & nephews.

She was incredibly thoughtful and kind. I have many childhood pictures of me enjoying gifts she would send me. When Brianna passed away, Aunt Claire prayed often & sent a thoughtful card / poem to show her support. When the other children were born she would always send big parcels with lots of amazing gifts for them. I have many of those items saved still to this day.

During our many visits to the United States we would stop and visit her. She always had to have a meal or dessert or something ready for us. She was an incredible host, always so kind and excited to have us visit her. Boston holds a special place in my heart and Hampton Beach will always be one of my favorite places. I am thankful that my first visit to see her led me to that beach and all of the amazing memories we have had since there.

When we choose Ella’s name, we considered a few possible middle names, but it really was an easy decision. I love that Ella can be named after such an amazing, strong woman who has meant so much to me. I am thankful “Ella Claire” has been blessed with being able to meet her and have some memories of her.

Aunt Claire meets Ella Claire for the first time!

About 3-4 weeks ago my Aunt Claire tested positive for Covid. She managed to fight the virus with very few symptoms. Unfortunately being 95 years old, the virus left her very weak and earlier this week she passed away with her bible in her hand. I truly love that I can rest knowing that I will see her again and that in the meantime she will be in great company. She was an inspiration of strength, courage, faith and love to all who knew her!
