Cherry Blossoms Bucket List

It’s no surprise to anyone that I struggle in the Winter. I mean my blog is titled “I Dream of Summer” and it couldn’t be more true. I love everything about Spring and Summer. I’ve tried in the last few years to embrace Winter and it certainly helps, but I’m always longing for summer.

We’ve gone away a few times throughout the Winter / early Spring, but it’s mostly to parts of Canada / New England, so the weather is similar to home.

We first came to Washington almost 10 years ago and I learned about all of the cherry blossom trees. We love Washington, it’s a beautiful city, so it was natural that I thought often about visiting during peak bloom in the Spring. It’s hard to take the kids out of school for a big chunk now that they are in the older grades, but Easter fell perfectly this year, so we booked our Spring trip to see the blossoms.

Peak bloom was supposed to be a day or two before our arrival. The Cherry Blossoms surprised us though and because of warmer temps, peaked on St Patrick’s Day. That was the second earliest bloom recorded in history. We often find during our travel, freak records get broken, so we weren’t overly surprised lol. We weren’t sure what it was all going to look like, but we would take what we get.

We arrived on March 28th and it didn’t take long for us to realize that it would all work out. The blossoms peak at different times and there are so many blooming trees all over Maryland and DC! It’s been amazing. I’m sure the kids are tired of me commenting as we drive to different parts of the area. Everything is so beautiful.

We kind of warped into Spring, so it has honestly given me a better appreciation for things I don’t pay enough attention to. For example the birds… when I woke up our first morning here, all I could hear were the sounds of birds mildly chirping away. And at night, the sound of crickets. I also appreciate so much all of the early blooms, they paint such a beautiful picture of Spring.

We leave in a few days and I am not looking forward to going back to the browns of Nova Scotia. I’ve reminded myself a few times that all of this is coming. In the meantime, I’m loving every moment of the warm temps and gorgeous scenery. Summer will be here before we know it and so will our next road trip… ❤️
